Treatment of the mentally ill should be more of a priority for society. The book, No One Cares About Crazy People by Ron Powers, discusses how widespread mental illness is and how there aren’t enough resources being put into it. "Mention mental illness, and the friendly woman who has trimmed your hair for years opens up about her stricken son. The assistant principal nods and tells you of her aunt, once a promising pianist, who has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals. (“ In and out”—that is a phrase you will encounter often.) Your cardiologist and his wife have sunk thousands into the care of his delusional sister." Sometimes the need isn’t as apparent as it is with other issues because people are embarrassed to speak out and draw attention to their own flaws or the flaws of their families.
In the book, No One Cares About Crazy People, it talks about the high percentage of prisoners who has a form of mental illness. Cameras have played a huge role in today’s world, capturing society’s most defenseless members - the mentally ill.
In our book, it states a few cases of mentally ill people being mistreated and eventually killed in the hands of the police. Mr. Boyd was a thirty eight year old man who was known to have a history of schizophrenia. He was never known to be as a violent man until the police forcibly removed him from an area he wasn’t supposed to be in. He was shot to death after reaching down for his backpack when he agreed to comply with the officers.
Many of these victims that fall in the hands of police brutality are were mentally ill and often non-threatening.

I think that all the ill people should be treated Equally. Why, because they have a special need that they need to be treated. No police or anyone with authority should have to kill an ill person. They should use force to an extent that they person is not hurt.
ReplyDeleteMentally ill people should not be mistreated just because they are in some sort of special condition. The fact that these people get mistreated is heart breaking and shouldn't be tolerated. Many people don't realize how being mentally ill is something hard to face and go against mentally ill people just for their condition and it is something that I believe needs to change
ReplyDeleteIt is so awful that people who are mentally ill are treated this way, it should not be that way. We need to have better healthcare for them so that they get help that truly helps them live a happy life. We also need better health education on the mentally ill for police officers and other professions so that they don't treat them that way.
ReplyDeleteBeing mentally ill is not a joke and should be taken much more serious in the US. The people who are mentally ill are no able to make the correct decision most of the time and they are just mistreated and expect to be able to fend for themselves. There should be much more people who are educated that are able to help them with their illnesses. Police should understand that most times the people are not aware of the decisions they are making at the time and not treat them cruelly like that.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that many problems are ignored by the public and treatment is one of them. Treatment is one of the most important things to humans. I mean that's why we created the golden rule "treat others the way you would like to be treated." I believe that treatment in general should be more thought of but because of these types of people who might be unstable or unable to fend for themselves treatment should be more of a concern. Although being mentally ill these people are still human and have feelings they're not just some thing that can be manipulated however someone wants them to be.
ReplyDeleteMentally ill people are very often targets for police violence, often because of misconceptions and stereotypes given to them about their illnesses. The worst misconception is that mentally ill people are dangerous and violent, when in fact they are more likely to be victims of violence because of their condition. I wish there were more being done to help them to a path of recovery rather than victimizing them for their illness.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is a stigma surrounding mental illness and like its not treated like an actual sickness. This bothers me because mental illness kills more people than physical sicknesses do at times.
